George Fox (1624-1691) was one of the founders of the Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers.The sculptor JOSEPH DURHAM was born in London and apprenticed to both J Francis and E H Baily, he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1835 onwards. He won a first prize in 1858 for a model of Britannia presiding over the Four Quarters of the Globe and this was later executed as a memorial to the Great Exhibition. In 1863 he sculpted the statue of the Prince Consort which was later erected outside the Royal Albert Hall.
