Staddle stones are nowadays very popular as garden decoration. In fact, they were originally used to support wooden barns above the surface so that rats and other vermin could not touch the corn in the barns. Most of the samples on today's market date from the 18th century but it is difficult to date them precisely because staddlestones have been cut in the same way since the 16th century.Their value has strongly increased - the most popular and desirable staddlestones are the big ones hewn from Cotswolds stone, Hamstone or another kind of limestone: these patine the most beautiful and have the greatest variety of lichens.
