A 19th century cast iron fountain, the basin on the inside decorated with mythological signs and supported by 4 balusters between which lizards are descending by way of virginia creepers, on octagonal base and stone plinth, stamped ‘ WALTER MAC FARLANE & C° GLASGOW Saracen Foundry ‘

Dimensions: fountain 86,5 cms high

Condition: good overall condition, small repairs, new paint (Farrow & Ball, ‘Green Smoke’, Oil Full Gloss).

Literature:

The Saracen Foundry was the better known name for the Glasgow based foundry company Walter MacFarlane & Co. Ltd, founded and owned by Walter MacFarlane. Macfarlane's was the most important manufacturer of ornamental ironwork in Scotland and was actice circa 1830s to the beginning of the twentieth century. The firm registered a number of designs. The Saracen Foundry and a nearby competitor, the Sun Foundry, among other Glasweigian foundries, were large suppliers to the architectural iron market.
